| Iraq, a General Statement |

As the events since the September 11th attacks have shown, strong international coalitions can serve to protect U.S. interests at home and abroad. The United Nations (U.N.) is not sovereign, and member nations must decide voluntarily whether and how to contribute resources to administer U.N. resolutions, which are only recommendations by nature. There is no authority higher than the U.N. member nations. Soldiers who participate in U.N. missions do not swear allegiance to the U.N. They wear their own national uniforms, and their home country carefully negotiates the terms of their participation and retains ultimate authority in personnel and disciplinary matters. In addition, a member nation such as the U.S. retains the right to withdraw its troops whenever it wishes.
It is also important to U.S. national security to remain a leading member of the U.N. The U.S. occupies a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council, where we can veto any security action. While I would not support surrendering American sovereignty to the U.N. or any other international or treaty organization, I believe the U.S. benefits from participating in the U.N. In circumstances where the world community would severely criticize the U.S. if we acted alone, it would be more difficult to achieve U.S. foreign policy objectives. We must maintain our strong influence within the U.N. and be willing to exercise our permanent veto power when necessary. Source: Candidate Website (10/02/2004) |

| Continued US Military Presence in Iraq |
|
In Iraq, we currently have more than 140,000 American troops willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. I believe we must look ahead to ensure the success of this mission and bring our soldiers home safely and as soon as possible. Although coalition forces have ended Saddam Hussein's brutal regime, we are now in the next phase of assisting Iraqi forces as they attempt to secure and stabilize their country in making the transition to full sovereignty. With support from U.S. forces and under a new governing authority made up exclusively of Iraqis, it is now time for the Iraqi people to stand up and fight for their liberty and become a catalyst for positive change throughout the region. | Iraq, a General Statement |
Our military must also rise to new challenges and we must continue to stay united and stand behind them. They give their all to promote and protect democracy at home and abroad. As Senator, and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will fight to provide them with every resource needed to defend our nation and its citizens. This is a new age in America. We must rise to the challenge, and working together, we will become a stronger nation. Source: Candidate Website (10/04/2008) |
